The Microcosmic Egg by SpikeWolfwood The Microcosmic Egg by SpikeWolfwood
“The Microcosmic Egg” is the fourth in a series of works that I call “The Ubiquitous Religion”. It’s just my small reflection of mankind’s dependence, relationships, and reactions to technology and science.

Throughout history there have been many theories regarding the beginning of all things. One such creationist theory is that of the “cosmic egg”. In such myths it is often suggested that mankind, the world, the universe or even god were born of a grand egg. These theories are understandable considering the power the egg has as a social symbol representing fertility, birth and life.

While it is miniscule compared to the scale of all existence, I feel that mankind is approaching an “egg” moment of its own in the field of bionics and AI. Every day, we come closer to redefining what it is to be alive, what it is to be human. Every year, more artificial implants are created or conceived to fix or enhance our physiology. Every year, artificial intelligence becomes a little less artificial. When these two fields finally mature and meet, we may be faced with artificial life.

I suggest maybe watching "Ghost in the Shell", a scifi movie in which people can transfer their "ghost"(mind/soul/whatever you call it) into a robotic body, while a complex computer program gains self-awareness, questioning what it means to be human.

The first Ghost in the Shell has been a favorite of mine since I was in high school. In fact, another piece of mine (The Body Electric) was heavily influenced by one of the promotional posters for that film. Thanks for the suggestion though.

This is awesome photo manipulation! I totally understand what you were talking about in the description and it amazes me how deeply you think on one subject and how well you express your opinions on the view of how our technology is slowly but surely growing! A definite :+fav:!

I think there's something really frightening to imagine (and I'm not trying to push an agenda here with this comment, or anything) an egg with life in it with an on/off button. Moreso now that I've read your explanation where it could contain God or the universe or both. "I don't want life to exist on Earth anymore! I'm pushing the button! *Blip*"

Anyway, I was actually attracted to the picture just because I things that glow blue are really pretty. >_> This is a very nice concept and photograph.

I was thinking about doing a sketch on how technology and science have blurred the edges of humanity and what is human, before I saw this piece. The theme seemed similar.
Nice, faved.
